Report on webinar “Newborn Hearing Screening”

The Newborn Hearing Screening webinar was held on Tuesday (25/6/2024). This activity is a collaboration between UGM, DIGM and the Union of European Phoniatricians. This webinar was opened with a brief presentation related to DIGM by Prof. Rasjid Soeparwata, followed by an explanation of the screening situation in Germany and prospects in Indonesia by Prof. Antoinette am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen MD PhD, University of Muenster, Union of European Phoniatricians. Then the situation of newborn hearing screening in 2 cities was displayed, in Jakarta, presented by Dr. dr. Semiramis Zizlavsky, Sp.THT-KL (K)D ) and in Yogyakarta, presented by dr.Asti Widuri Sp.THT-KBL. This webinar also presents discussants, dr. Agus Surono, M.Sc, PhD, Sp.THT K-L from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Dr. dr. Tri Juda Airlangga Hardjoprawito, Sp. Sp. T. H. T. B. K. L, Subsp. K. (K) from Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Airlangga and Prof. Dr. Nyilo Purnami dr. Sp.THT.KL(K) from Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. The moderator of this webinar is Prof dr. Laksono Trisnantoro, M.Sc, PhD.

Professor emerita Antoinette am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen is presenting a lecture with the title “Newborn Hearing Screening – Targets, Evaluation in Germany, Prospects for Indonesia”, mainly talking about the importance of early hearing loss detection by Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS) and of early intervention (1-3-6 months of age benchmark), about what may be learnt by the results of the NHS evaluation in Germany and highlighting possible problematic aspects to implement NHS in Indonesia.

Dr. dr. Semiramis Zizlavsky, Sp.THT-KL (K)D is presenting a lecture with the title “ Situation of Newborn Hearing Screening in Jakarta”, mainly talking about the principle of screening (non-invasive, accurate, cheap and quick), the data of hearing screening in some hospitals in Indonesia, hearing screening methods(OAE, AABR),the benefit of screening, also about the intervention that should be done before age of 6 months so that there will be better communication skills of the hearing impaired children.

dr.Asti Widuri Sp.THT-KBL is presenting a lecturewith the title “Newborn Hearing Screening – Experience in Several Private Hospitals in Yogyakarta Indonesia”, mainly talking about research on the influence of parents’ knowledge and health care access on the identification of children with hearing impairment, the relation between parental education levels and awareness of the necessity of NHSand about pathways of NHS in type A,B,C Hospitals.
